I thought it would be appropriate to kick off the Before & After feature with my first ever makeover project.
I spotted this chair on the side of the road and despite not having a house to put it in (I was still living with my parents at the time) I couldn’t leave the poor thing. It was the beginning of my love of makeovers, fabric and mid-century furniture.
The paintwork was in terrible condition, so I planned to re-coat it in white. When I was sanding it back though, I discovered the beautiful timber and quality craftsmanship. After restoring the timber, I set to work re-covering the seat with this funky Amy Butler fabric. I left the existing upholstery on there and simply added another layer of wadding and used a staple gun to attach the fabric.

Do you have a project that sparked a new hobby, or maybe even a new career?

Hey, I saw this chair on design sponge.
To answer your question: I’m getting my own apartment with some friends near campus next year, and I got really excited about furnishing and decorating it, started looking up things on apartmenttherapy.com…and I discovered a passion for interior design, which is what I’m going into now.
I’m curious to know–how did you restore the timber? I would like to read about that!
I also love midcentury modern!
I have now added full instructions here:
