Under stairs before Under stairs after

We’ve had a teensy issue under our stairs. Bear in mind that this is not hidden in some rarely used corner, it’s right in the middle of our small open-plan living/dining room.

It started when The Man and I got engaged, oh, almost two years ago. We (er, I…) started collecting decorations for the engagement party, then the wedding. After the wedding the boxes just, well, stayed there.

I have sloooowly been picking away at the pile, donating something here, repurposing something there. Until finally, miracle of miracles, it is now back to how it should be and I’m no longer ashamed to have anyone see it.

Does anyone else have that one problem area in your home? Please tell me I’m not the only one.

  • I’ve got multiple problem areas in my house. 😉

    • Haha!

  • My husband HATES my “stacking problem” I have piles and stacks of things all over in an effort to keep clutter organized.

    • Surely stacking is better than ‘coating’ the entire room with junk?!

  • Ugh. Yes. It’s our garage. Which, thankfully, I don’t have to look at each day because only one car fits and only barely these days. Ongoing projects end up there… including the furniture refinishing project of my fiancee for… oh… the past 2 years.

    • Glad I’m not the only one, Jess! Sometimes I’m glad we don’t have a big house with garage etc, at least a small house forces you to tidy up… eventually!

I have the EXACT same problem. My roommate and I stored all our extra stuff that didn’t have a home under our stairs and it hasn’t moved for about a year now.

    • Good luck, Melissa. Let us know how you go.

My upstairs landing. Definitely my landing. Toys, clothes, boxes, baby furniture recently removed from the baby’s room, bookcases, the sofa bed (MEANT for those random overnight guests – if they could get to it!). I would LOVE it to actually be a guest room/spare rec room for the kids but I don’t even know where to start!

    • Wow, sounds like a huge landing! How about starting by removing anything that you don’t plan to keep (donate or sell unwanted furniture, toys and clothes)? Hopefully it should be then a bit easier to find a home for the remaining items that you want to keep and arrange it into a useful space. You’re most welcome to email through a photo and we can work through it together if you like? I’d love to start incorporating more reader spaces.
