I mentioned Tasmanian illustrator Beth Emily in my Bowerbird Bazaar recap. Six months later I am still thinking about her sweet style so she clearly deserves to be the star of the first Obsess & Inspire post I’ve done in ages.
The combination of delicate black linework accented by looser washes of colour works beautifully to show the details of nature. You can find more information about her work, including her signature bird illustrations on Panelpop frames, on her website.
I mentioned a few weeks ago that I commissioned a piece from Kyleigh’s Papercuts for The Man for our first wedding anniversary and I adore it so much I had to give her some more love with a feature post.
Kyleigh hand cuts each piece from a single sheet of paper and they can be delivered either unframed or in one of her signature awesome transparent frames. She has plenty of ready-made designs featuring song lyrics in her shop or you can commission one with your own wording, such as a favourite quote or details of a birth or marriage.
Oh how I love me a good conceptual design. Yep, even for kids’ stuff. Why not!

I always love discovering a new artist and it’s even better when you then find out that they’re local. That’s exactly what happened to me recently on Twitter with fellow Adelaide designer Zoe Ingram and I’ve been hooked on her bright and bold prints ever since. Find more in her shop.
I stumbled across German designer Hannes Beer’s work recently and was immediately taken by the textured retro look and clever visual plays. In his ambitious All Day Everyday project, Hannes creates one artwork each day for a year. It’s fascinating to see his response to world events, his personal life, movies he’s seen and other everyday influences.

Why on earth has it taken me this long to do an Obsess & Inspire post on Mr Papercut himself, Rob Ryan?
His work is so breathtaking I had such a hard time choosing just a few pieces to show here, so get thee to his website or shop where you’re sure to discover some favourites of your own.
While entering the Realise Your Dream Awards recently (eek!), I checked out the winners from previous years and if they’re anything to go by I will have some pretty serious competition.
One such winner was the creative duo twin sisters Maricor and Maricar Manalo. Now freelancing as Maricor Maricar, they are the artists behind some incredible mixed-media illustrations for editorial, video clips and private commissions. The highlight for me is their amazingly detailed hand embroidered typograpy in rainbow hues.
We designers love our Pantone, it’s part of the job description. I’m pretty sure there was a collective reaching for the credit card when they launched Pantone Universe merchandise.
(I have the tea towels if you’re wondering.)
There seem to be so many toys and characters from my childhood popping back up these days. One of them is Eric Carle’s classic The Very Hungy Caterpillar. The book’s resurgence has spawned a fantastic array of merchandise and crafts ideas.
