Bookcase as dollhouse

I can imagine that those of you with children would find that they grow out of toys so quickly. And those fancy dolls’ houses? Some of them are so intricate that they look like they’d cost a week’s pay, yet the little one will probably grow out of it in a couple of years.

How about transforming a basic cube bookcase into a dolls’ house with a few simple tweaks like in this tutorial from Honest to Nod? It will get your child involved in creating and decorating their own ‘house’, then when they’ve grown out of it, it can be turned into storage for their books and games.

Nursery before

Pastel palettes in nurseries can look sweet, but babies love bright colours and bold patterns. That’s why this nursery makeover by Summer Bellessa is so great. Not only does bub have plenty of stimulation, the bolder scheme means he won’t grow out of it so soon.

Mathilda's Market November 2011 Adelaide

You guys! I’m so excited about my first ever market which is happening this weekend! Called Mathilda’s Market, it’ll be chock full of the funkiest kids’ gear around, just in time for Christmas shopping for your own little ones or perhaps some lucky nieces and nephews.

It has free entry and parking, so no excuses – I’ll see you there!

Folk baby print pink/red

I designed a matryoshka-inspired baby shower invitation for a friend recently (don’t know why I haven’t shown you that yet, sorry!) and I thought it was so sweet I wanted to turn it into a print.

It’s available in pink/red or blue/orange in medium or large size.

You can also have it personalised for a newborn gift that will outlast all those onesies.

Hit up my shop to get yours!

I’m pretty damn excited to watch the list of Akimbo stockists keep growing.

The latest is a real life bricks and mortar store in Hawthorn, Victoria. Kids Style Hub is the Melbourne destintation for stylish kids’ fashion and lifestyle accessories, all by independent Australian and New Zealand designers. It’s more than just shopping though, there’s also a cafe, gallery and party room.

Pop in and say hello to Nicole and the team and get some help with your Christmas shopping. But if you’re not in Melbourne, never fear! The online shop is launching soon.

I’m excited to announce that Akimbo will be selling at its first kids’ market, Mathilda’s Market. It’s in late November so it’s perfect to come and do all your Christmas shopping for your children, nieces and nephews (as well as plenty to spoil yourself!).

There seem to be so many toys and characters from my childhood popping back up these days. One of them is Eric Carle’s classic The Very Hungy Caterpillar. The book’s resurgence has spawned a fantastic array of merchandise and crafts ideas.

Obsess & Inspire - Tad Carpenter

I know, I know, another Obsess & Inspire about funky illustrated screenprinted music posters. Will you let me off if I tell you that the super talented designer Tad Carpenter also illustrates greeting cards, advertisements, awesome prints for kids’ rooms and even snowboards?

See more examples of his quirky characters and fun hand-lettering on his blog.

I’ve had this incredible room (originally found on Design*Sponge) in my inspiration files for the longest time but I could never seem to fit it into my posting schedule. The Before & After project I had planned to post is taking a little longer than expected (don’t they always?) so I thought I’d bring this makeover into the daylight at long last. Roll up and enjoy!

Holy awesome, right? It was created by stylist Kate Dixon and photographed by Jackson Visuals for a concept home so sadly there was no lucky little ringleader able to live here, but it’s still fantastic inspiration.
