Akimbo at Bowerbird Bazaar

I’ve mentioned my big weekend at Bowerbird Bazaar a couple of times this week so I think it’s high time I showed you some photos!

Last time my stall setup was pretty basic as I was just trialling the market to see if it would work for my business. Thankfully it did so this time around I put a fair bit more effort into my display. It still has a way to go but I am quite happy with it.

I launched some new products including these screenprinted white on kraft cards which were a hit so I’m very happy with that! (Coming to the online shop soon.)

Thank you SO much to my friends and family for their support, especially my Dad for helping set up and The Man for being there helping all weekend.

And a HUGE shout out to all you lovely readers who came along and said hello! It’s so nice to put faces to the blog stats ;)

Akimbo Clever Hello Club

How are we today, friends? I’m still recovering from my huge weekend at Bowerbird Bazaar – no stamina now since I turned 29 on Saturday ;)

I wanted to tell you about an awesome project I’ve been working on and have just released. Called the Clever Hello Club, it’s a greeting card subscription service where you receive two of my Akimbo cards each month.

Some will be seasonal and others will be for life’s occasions, both big and little. I love having a stash of cards ready to go for any occasion because I hate that last-minute dash to the shops before a party, don’t you?

You can choose from either a 6 or 12 month subscription for yourself or as a gift (ahemmothersdayahem). And because I know you’re spread all over the world, I’m not charging any more for international shipping (you can’t say I don’t look after you!).

I’m currently taking orders for the first shipment which will go out in June. Join us in the Clever Hello Club!

Bowerbird Bazaar May 2013 flyer

I’m currently packing my gear to head off to set up my stall at Bowerbird Bazaar for another year.

It’s a really awesome market full of handmade and designer wares by indie artists. So if  you’re in Adelaide and are looking for quality homewares, art, stationery, fashion or Mother’s Day gifts, come on over to the Wayville Showgrounds this weekend!

There’s also lots of yummy food and entertainment so it’s a great day out. It’s open tonight 4-9pm and Saturday & Sunday 10am-5pm.

The Akimbo stall will be along the back wall and it will be bursting with never-before-seen products which I’m crazy excited about. I LOVE meeting readers in person so make sure you come and say hello!

P.S. Follow me on Instagram for behind the scenes snaps during the market.

Akimbo website home

Hip hip hooray! The brand spanking new website for my stationery business Akimbo is up and running!

It was a deceptively epic undertaking so it’s a big thrill to be able to finally unveil it.

As I mentioned in my reader survey results post, I’ll now be posting all of my business goings-on on the new Akimbo blog so you can join me over there for all the wedding inspiration and stationery you can handle. That being said, since my work is such a big part of my life no doubt it will still be a feature here on Atypical Type A. Oh and I’ll still post some of the DIYs here because I know how much you love your crafting!

Hop over and check out the new website and blog. Let me know what you think!

spring blossoms

Hello friends.

Daily readers may have noticed that I’ve skipped a few days lately, instead of my regular five-posts-a-week-like-clockwork. I don’t take my lovely readers for granted and I feel I owe a bit of an explanation.

I have been trying my hardest to keep up, but with most of my time taken up by my business Akimbo (including a huge website redesign and rebrand coming very soon!), there has been very little time left for writing posts, let alone doing the blog-worthy projects in the first place! I love love love writing Atypical Type A for you and it pains me greatly that I’ve not been able to give it the attention it needs. I would rather skip a day than just slap up a quick post just for the sake of ticking it off. You deserve better than that.

While my workload has increased I’m actually trying to cut down on my working hours because it was getting a bit out of control and unhealthy. I’m a bit of a workaholic so it’s hard for me to say ‘enough’ at the end of the day and be happy (or at least okay) with leaving things un-done. I know I need to do it though – finding that elusive work/life balance – because my projects, passions, relationships and experiences fuel not only my personal happiness and sanity but also my work.

It’s not all doom and gloom though! I am working on some sweet-as developments that will bring Atypical Type A into its next phase and I could not be more excited. It’s going to be a lot of work so I am looking at bringing in some writing help and having plenty of reader submissions and guest posts. Yahoo! That way I’ll be able to keep the regular quality content up and I can focus my attention more on tutorials and other projects. The content topics will remain the same, but there’ll be some shiny new columns and awesome features to take Atypical Type A from just a blog to a full resource. Oh and did I mention a full site redesign?!

I am so pumped about this next stage of Atypical Type A and cannot wait to reveal what I have in store for you guys! Til then, please bear with me while I’m busy working on everything behind the scenes.

Speaking of ‘what’s next’ for Atypical Type A, I have a ton of ideas but none of it is set in stone so if there’s anything you’d like to see more of, please leave your suggestions in the comments!

Entwined027

Recently I asked an amazingly talented team of wedding pros to help me create an inspiration shoot based around one of my new invitation collections for my business Akimbo.

I think I’m going to step out of the way and let the images do the talking today.

Bowerbird Bazaar July 2012

I recently had the immense pleasure of shilling my wares at the Bowerbird Bazaar design market here in Adelaide. I’d been attending (and blogging about) it for years so it felt a bit surreal actually being a part of it. Big tick for one of my business goals!

Without further ado, here are some photos of my finished stall:

With the help of my dad I had all of that set up ready to go embarrassingly early so I had plenty of time to wander around and take photos and meet people. (Most of these photos were taken before doors opened, hence the lack of people!)

I was inspired by the Days of August stall, who like me has a very diverse range but still managed to display it in a way that made it feel like a cohesive collection. Oh, and the packaging! I saw girls walking around with these adorable little suit bags and it took me awhile to realise they were the Days of August necklaces made of vintage ties.

I recently discovered the work of Sydney illustrator Andrea Smith and was instantly smitten with her folk art style. But it wasn’t til I viewed the artworks in person that I saw that they are actually collages of handpainted paper, which gives it a beautiful texture and depth.

It was lovely to meet Katrina of Kitty Came Home for the first time since I love her work and we share a couple of the same stockists. Her stall made out of crates must have been a huge amount of work but boy did it ever look impressive!

It was great to see some new and more adult-oriented prints from the lovely folks at Printspace.

I could not believe that this was my stall neighbour Jane Bowring‘s first market – her display was so beautiful and well thought-out (the small snippet above doesn’t give the full impact). She also did demonstrations on her wire weaving technique which proved very popular.

I’ve done a handful of small markets but this was my first big one. I was overwhelmed by the support I received from my friends and family, so many of whom visited or wrote me encouraging messages. I couldn’t have done it without The Man who was by my side for most of the three day event.

While I love having an online business, there’s nothing quite like meeting customers in person. I had a bunch of you dear blog readers and followers of my business introduce themselves, plus many more who said they’d seen my work around or even purchased it before from one of my lovely stockists. That was so gratifying and encouraging and I can’t tell you how much it means to me, so thank you!

I also had a wonderful time talking to some of my fave designers and meeting some new ones. I feel very fortunate to be a part of such a wonderful community of creatives.

I returned home exhausted but inspired.

Utopia scene

One of my favourite Adelaide wedding venues Utopia (set in the beautiful surrounds of Waterfall Gully) is having a bridal open day – and Akimbo will be there!

They are showcasing a bunch of great local wedding vendors in their new function pavilion. There will be food tastings, fashion parades, bubbly and goodie bags for you to enjoy. Oh, and it’s free!

Hello my dears. I’ve been flat out this week with lots of new client jobs so I haven’t had a chance to go through the photos I took last weekend at Bowerbird Bazaar. For now, here’s a snap of my stall and I’ll be back next week with a full roundup.

Have a great weekend everyone!
