cake buffet labels

I hope you liked the cake buffet that I showed you this morning. As promised, I am providing the scalloped labels as a free download.

1. Download the font and PDF template.
2. Type in the names of your sweet treats.
3. Print on thick, textured cardstock (I used 300gsm watercolour paper).
4. Punch out circles using a craft punch (I used Friskars 2″ / 5cm scalloped circle punch).
5. Attach to ribbon using double-sided tape, or insert into holder.

Use as gift tags (punch a small hole and thread through string or ribbon)
Use as favour labels (print onto adhesive paper instead of cardstock)

cake buffet

As I mentioned yesterday, my family and I threw a surprise birthday for my mum last weekend. With the ‘let them eat cake’ theme of the invitation, a cake buffet was a must!

Oh, macarons, where have you been all my life?

I’d like to think that I’m a half decent cook, but baking, well that’s a completely different story. After a bit of trial and error, I got there in the end and am really pleased with how everything turned out (especially my first-ever batch of biscuits – yay!). The cupcake decorations were made using silicone moulds that I bought on Etsy. The crowns and fleur de lys fit the Marie Antoinette theme perfectly.

It was held at beautiful Auchendarroch House in the Adelaide Hills. We knew it would be the perfect venue since it features loads of original William Morris designs, who Mum is certifiably obsessed mildly enamoured with. Check out those curtains!

Mum’s present, with more William Morris goodness on the card.

The surprise went off without a hitch, Mum didn’t suspect a thing, I reckon we could have scraped her jaw from the floor after she walked in!

Show & Tell

Two things you need to know about my mum: 1. She hates being the centre of attention. 2. She has a sweet tooth.

So with a significant birthday on the horizon, the family knew she would never suggest a party, and if we tried to arrange it with her knowledge she would have felt the need to do all the work both planning and during the party (just like every. party. my parents have ever hosted). It was clearly going to be up to us to arrange the celebration she deserves, so the plotting began!

To keep it low-key (see point 1), we decided on having only immediate family and close friends for a decadent afternoon tea (see point 2). I deliberately left out the B-word altogether and the ‘let them eat cake’ theme be the focus, so that it had the feeling of being a party that she would like rather than one that was actually in her honour.

With the Marie Antoinette connection (and Mum being a bit of a francophile), I had fun adding some French touches like the fleur-de-lys cut out, oui/non reply card and hints of a ‘revolution’. The palette was inspired by the colours and delicacy of macarons. I love how the curly calligraphy makes it look fun and girlish, apparently like Marie herself.

Akimbo Marie RSVP

My mum instilled in me from a young age the importance of thank you notes, so to show her I was listening, I created some ‘merci’ cards. I also knew she was keen to have some calling cards.

Honestly I am SO thrilled to be adding this collection, Marie, as it’s my first letterpress product. To make letterpress more affordable, I have also included some fill-in invitations, which conjures up images of a baby shower, bridal shower, birthday or even just a decadent girls’ afternoon.

Phew, that feels better. I have been itching to share this big project with you so it feels great not to have to keep it a secret any longer!

Make sure you come back tomorrow when I’ll not only be posting my regular Fab & Free instalment (hint: it matches these invitations), plus I’ll have a second post with photos of the cake buffet that I set up for the party.
